Minimalist Outfits for the Sleekest City Look Ever

With the weather getting cooler, there are so many ways to rethink the average outfit. But for those of us who like to flaunt that classic minimalist look once in awhile, it can be tricky finding a balance between simplicity and an over-layering hot mess. Luckily, there are easy ways to stay cozy and look put-together at the same time!

My friends and I just indulged in a day trip to Chicago for our long weekend, and if you ask me, we were a spiffy bunch of city slickers. We decided we’d share our favorite minimalist pieces to help keep you cooler than the fall weather. As is evident in this lookbook, these girls have amazing style (maybe you remember Maggie from this post). Enjoy our adventures through the city!

How do you look your best on trips to the city? Have you mastered the art of minimalism? Let me know in the comments below, and stick around for more fun fall content coming soon to the blog!

Late Summer Lookbook feat. Maggie Grace Fashion

Hey, guys! I have been meaning to join sartorial forces with Maggie Grace Fashion for the longest time, and I’m excited to finally be able to present you with our collaboration! Maggie is a young designer with the mindset of creating beautiful clothing for all women to feel confident in. She’s participated in major fashion events, from local runway shows to fashion weeks across the country. Her designing abilities speak for themselves, but I interviewed Maggie to delve a bit deeper into her style world. When you realize you love her as much as I do, check out some of the designs on her website at http://www.maggiegracefashion.com.

When did you first start designing and why?

I started designing clothes for my Barbies out of napkins and hand sewing them when I was eight. I loved fashion, drawing, and architecture. I gave up on sewing when I was 10 and picked it back up around 13. I started making costumes and clothes for my friends and having photo shoots with them. I tried out for Project Runway Jr and didn’t make it on, but I kept sewing and making clothes for my family and myself.

How would you describe your own personal style?

My personal style is uptown chic with a downtown edge. I love glamorous New York City style clothes and lots of street style. I love neutrals with a pop of colour and dark make up. Blacks, nudes, greys, whites, and dark greens with pops of red, silver, gold, and pink are necessities in my closet. I also incorporate everything that I like to wear into my collections.

What opportunities have arisen from your fashion business?

I have been able to do so much in fashion because of my brand! I was featured in a runway show at my school and showcased my prom looks and auctioned off a homecoming dress. I was nominated for Young Designer of the Year and released my fall and winter collection on the runway in New York. I was also a finalist for Project Runway Jr but declined for independent reasons. I’ve also been blessed with incredible clients and have been able to sell so many pieces. I’m looking forward to Washington DC Fashion Week and New Orleans Fashion Week as well.

It can be intimidating making a name for yourself in the fashion industry, especially at such a young age. What would you say sets you apart from other designers?

It’s especially hard to create such a name this young because of all the negative people that try to bring you down. I have numerous people tell me I’m too young or not talented enough. I think my age definitely sets me apart because I am running a business so young. My design aesthetic is very different and I take risks that other designers don’t. I use sheer fabric and corsets that may seem too risqué to people. Also, I work on custom fashion, which means I work one-on-one with the client and figure out what they like.

What advice would you give other young designers looking to enter the fashion world?

I would tell other young designers to work extremely hard and take every opportunity given to them. I would say to quit sports and clubs for a little to build up their business. Most importantly to be themselves and never give up or give in to what someone else wants them to be.

Vacation Outfit Diaries – June

As promised in my last post, I have returned with a chronicle of my outfits during a trip to Nebraska last week! To be honest, I expected more corn than culture in this midwestern haven, but I was pleasantly surprised by a smattering of thrift shops, antique stores, and quaint malls throughout the state. These diaries include not only what Naomi and I brought with us to wear, but what we inevitably discovered along the road. Enjoy!

Spring Break Outfit Diaries – Day 2

Our Spring Break adventures continue in today’s outfit diaries, this time with a Chicago twist. The three of us explored all the ins and outs of my favorite city, snapping street style pics and dysfunctional selfies along the way. Enjoy our travels through Illinois’ metropolis!

Whose street style look was your favorite? Would you like to see more outfit diaries on the blog? Let me know in the comments below!

Style Rookie: Jocelyn Dubose

This year, one of my best friends, Jocelyn, took an apparel course at her school. It’s evident that she’s garnered a wealth of sartorial knowledge, from sewing to designing patterns. Guess what she gave me for Christmas this year? A handcrafted purse made out of old vinyl records! So in honor of all the amazing skills Joce has learned, here’s a delightful display of her finest pieces, as well as a thought-provoking interview.

Electric Thrift: What have you learned from designing and creating your own clothes?

Jocelyn: I learned that creating your own clothes takes a lot of time! But you get to say you made it, so it’s totally worth it. I’ve also learned a lot about reading patterns, and how to make your own patterns for things (I made my own pattern for the backpack). I learned that I love to sew and wear my fabulous creations!

ET: Describe the process of turning design ideas into real pieces.

J: With my fur coat, I first found the fur and then the idea of the coat came along. So from there you just buy or make your own pattern, sew sew sew, and voilá! A new fur coat! But for other things you find inspiration first, like a velvet coat worn by a celebrity, or an awesome black curtain sitting in your drawer asking you to turn it into a rocking tank top! Or maybe just the colors of the trees or flowers, or any random object that catches your eye. You have to find the perfect fabric for your piece too, then the pattern, and then your hands and a sewing machine do the rest!

ET: What’s your favorite piece that you’ve made?

J:  Probably my fur coat because of how wonderfully fantastic it is, but the red velvet coat it a very close second.

ET: How does fashion reflect your individuality?

J:  If you saw me in my normal clothes, you definitely wouldn’t assume I love fashion, because my wardrobe is very comfy and laid back most of the time. But I think by seeing the pieces I sew, you can see that my style is more classy, and a little fur crazy!

ET: Would you consider apparel design to be a useful skill?

J: Yes, absolutely!!! It helps you to be more creative in the way you see things and make things. Also, it’s helpful in daily living. For example, my friends backpack strap broke at school once. Instead of her going to spend money on a new one, I sewed it up and it worked like it it was brand new!

A big thanks to Jocelyn for letting me pester her about apparel! How does fashion inspire you in everyday life? Share your thoughts and style with me in the comments below!

Sisterhood of the Traveling…Trousers?

Sisterhood Joggers

So you guys know the book/movie Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, right? Yes, of course you do because you don’t live under a rock. Well, my best friends and I share a bond similar to the girls’ in the film, and we thought it appropriate to find a pair of pants to reflect that. The ones we found aren’t quite like the ones in the story, considering they don’t have magical powers to adapt to each of our bodies…

However, they fit us all! And we think they’re worthy enough to rewrite the classic tale into Sisterhood of the Traveling Trousers! Can’t you just see it in theaters now? We each have a different sense of style – from cozy to crazy – and different adventures, but we’re all united through a delightful pair of pants. So without further ado, let’s explore the different styles of the sisterhood!

Lauren:

The free spirit of our tight-knit clan, Lauren loves to explore different looks. She’s an emerging designer herself, expert at buying thrifted items and revamping them into sartorial masterpieces! Her style is much like her personality, off-the-wall and unapologetically fun. From boho to punk princess, she’s certainly a fashion tour de force.

Jocelyn:

Jocelyn is my go-to girl for casual yet classic style. We all want to feel comfortable at school and work, so embrace the cozy look! Her wardrobe consists largely of timeless denim and soft sweaters, but she isn’t afraid to throw in an edgy piece here and there (*cough, cough* pink fur coat and towering biker boots). Joce rocks understated street style; what’s more eternal than a broken-in pair of sneakers?joce 4 - Edited

Naomi:

If there’s any fashionista who knows what she likes, it’s Naomi, the cozy-chic member of our squad. Fuzzy sweaters paired with polka-dots and lace are staples in her closet. She probably has the girliest taste of our crew, which is nice to balance out the edginess of the rest of us. Any day of the week, you can spot this girl flaunting a cute pair of ballet flats and a trendy fedora. (Her miniature dog Bubbles is a common accessory as well!)

Top - Kohls; Skirt - Goodwill; Shoes - Payless

Skylar (me!):

I’m not sure my fashion identity fits into a single label. More often than not, my style depends on how I feel when I wake up in the morning. Why have one look when you can embody the entire legion of sartorial trends? The way I dress reflects who I am, and I prefer to embrace the beauty of eclecticism!

Denim Jacket - Body Central; Dress - Urban Outfitters; Flannel - Target; Creepers - Niche

As you can see, we all have varied tastes in fashion! But sharing a pair of ornate trousers somehow reminds us of the bond we share despite our differences.

Styling My Friends – Naomi

What’s more exciting than getting permission to scavenge through other people’s closets? The answer, my friends, is nothing. I was fortunate enough to get to style my sweet (and enviously tall) friend Naomi this week. Rummaging through her wardrobe made me realize how much her fashion sense resembles her personality. Her collection of tasteful hats, cozy knits, and classic heels completely reflected her warmth and individuality. I am a strong believer that you are what you wear!

I’ll never forget her exasperated sigh, accompanied by a word of self-assurance, “Just do it for fashion.” Thanks Naomi, for letting me dress you up!
