OOTD: Simple Summer Uniform

I’m about a week in to summer, and I have to say, it’s pretty nice having freedom! The first thing I did to commemorate the end of junior year was buy a new bike. And you know what I did with it? I rode it as long as I wanted, because I DON’T HAVE ANY HOMEWORK TO STOP ME.

When it comes to comfortable summer attire, it’s hard to find a balance between looking like an off-duty model and a kid from The Sandlot. The trick is to pair one casual, comfy piece with more fashion forward trends. I’ve done this here by sporting a super chic off-the-shoulder top underneath my beloved pair of vintage overalls. ❤ And to top it all off, I threw on a choker and a pair of eternal Converse sneakers. Voila, now you’re ready to walk the runways and lay among the flowers!

Spring bohemian retro lace tunic

How to Style Springtime Bohemian

The sun is out, the grass is green, and I can’t imagine a better day to wear a lacy tunic. I can’t believe it’s almost summer already! But there’s only one full week of school left, and the pastels of the trees are fading to a bright green, so we must be on the cusp of summer. Before we barrel into 80 degree weather, shall we embrace the fleeting breezes of spring with a delicate outfit? I think yes 🙂

To get that effortless boho look, slip on a flowy top with dainty details, and top the look off with long feather/flower necklaces and a chic pair of sandals! Everyone will think you just came from a music festival 😛

What does your summer style look like? Do you have a favorite bohemian piece to flaunt? Gimme a shout in the comments below!

April Favorites 2016

Hey, everyone! One of the things I enjoy most about blogging is getting the opportunity to share what inspires me with all of you. Today’s monthly favorites reflect on the life lessons, style inspirations, and simple treasures I’ve garnered throughout April. I hope your May is as good as April was!

Bohemian Style

The idea of shifting into the summer season has worried me slightly. It’s just so easy to layer for fall and winter, that I panicked at the thought of what to wear during the warmer months. Luckily, I found inspiration in the bohemian expertise of festival style (ahem, Coachella)! So prepare yourselves, because I am now a self-proclaimed flowerchild.

Plants

Okay maybe I’m less of a flowerchild and more of a…plant lady. Yes, I named my philodendron (Phil, get it?). No, I am not entirely crazy. What’s more beautiful than a bedroom full of plants? #PlantLadiesUnite

Poetry

I have to say, April has been a pretty rough month as far as school and stress go. I’ve found the most cathartic way to spend my free time is reading and writing. Poetry has been a big outlet for me lately, particularly the words of Milton. My favorite piece by him at the moment is “On His Blindness”:

When I consider how my light is spent,
Ere half my days, in this dark world and wide,
And that one Talent which is death to hide
Lodged with me useless, though my Soul more bent
To serve therewith my Maker, and present
My true account, lest he returning chide;
“Doth God exact day-labour, light denied?”
I fondly ask. But patience, to prevent
That murmur, soon replies, “God doth not need
Either man’s work or his own gifts; who best
Bear his mild yoke, they serve him best. His state
Is Kingly. Thousands at his bidding speed
And post o’er Land and Ocean without rest:
They also serve who only stand and wait.”

May a poem, or a plant, or a pretty piece of clothing brighten your life this month! And don’t forget to say hello in the comments below 🙂

Vintage spring slipdress with blazer

Lessons in Street Style: The Slipdress

Hello everyone! My apologies for not posting last week, I’ve been recuperating from treacherous ACTs. But the pain of standardized testing is over…at least until finals in a few weeks! 😀 Now there is a beautiful tree with shades of ivory bursting outside my window, and I am so ready to embrace spring style.

My look today channels the trend that’s been sweeping city streets lately: the slipdress. I’ve made the racy look slightly more everyday by balancing it with a blazer. Not to mention, the dress and blazer bring out soft shades of pastels — perfect for the season!

Are you guys whipping out the pastels yet? How do you feel about the slipdress trend? Keep checking the blog for upcoming collabs and style tips! And don’t forget to leave me some love in the comments below 🙂

How to Rock the Spring Floral Look

Warm weather is rolling around once again, and what better way to share your spring fever than through a beloved floral pattern? Lucky for you, I’ve got some tips on how to show off this dainty motif. You’ll be dying to have a picnic by the end of this post!

Tired of typical girly flowers? Add a bit of edge to the trend with chokers and combat boots. Not to mention, you’ll look like you just stepped off the Coach 1941 runways. Prairie punk is so in, guys.

If you’d rather opt for a cute and casual look, pair vivid floral pieces with neutrals. Make the flowers pop (or bloom, I suppose) by keeping everything else simple.

What’s your favorite way to wear the season on your sleeve? Are there any trends you’re dying to see on Electric Thrift? Let me know in the comments below!

February Favorites 2016

February has passed, and I’m excited to be moving into a fresh new season! Before we begin any new adventures, however, let’s take a look back at what made last month wonderful…

MFW Street Style

The people of Milan cannot be kept from shining sartorially. Despite the gloomy weather, street stylers defended their titles as lovers of color and originality.

Flowers

I know, I know, it’s a little early to be thinking about spring. But the weather has been so nice, I can’t help but liven up every empty space with plants!

 Sneakers

I essentially live in my sneakers. Especially since Adidas Superstars and Puma Classics go with everything, I’ve been wearing them nonstop.

Denim with Patches

What better way to look edgy on a budget? These fun little appliqués are a fun take on any denim piece!

Simple Seasonal Transitions

My apologies for the mini-hiatus last week! Life has been super busy this month, but I’ve got a lot of fabulous content coming up (*hint, hint* collabs, monthly favorites, and fashion week recaps).

The weather lately has been fantastic, and it’s putting me in a good mood. On Saturday, it was over 60 degrees! In ChicagoIn February. Yeah I know, it’s pretty miraculous. Call me crazy, but I didn’t even wear a coat today. All I needed was my trusty turtleneck and a good pair of high-waisted jeans. As the year progresses and the sun shines a little brighter, I find myself shedding more layers. Pretty soon I’ll be whipping out the florals!

Remember my fashion-forward friend Jocelyn from this post a while back? To add to her repertoire of sartorial achievements, she sent me this handmade leather and vinyl purse! Props to her for actually hand-sewing records onto a bag. This edgy piece just topped off my transition look.

Milan Fashion Week Highlights

The vivid colors and unapologetic personality of Milan Fashion Week have unfortunately come to an end. We’ve been left with post-summer depression, daydreams of bold eyeliner and oversized earrings haunting our heads. But although autumn breezes hinder our warm-weather reminiscing, who says we have to abandon the euphoria of the Milan runways? I say cling to those sandals and swimsuits, and lavish these highlights from MFW!

Do stripes ever really go out of style? The Burani and Missoni lines explored the fitted striped top, while No. 21 took an alternative approach with thick-lined sets. Armani remained classy as ever, utilizing the versatility of the stripe for a more polished look.

Ruffles are not just for the Victorian sophisticate, as Milan has clearly proven. No. 21 was all about the feminine feature – and can we take a moment to appreciate the 90s t-shirt/dress throwback? Francesco Scagnamiglio (say that three times fast) ensured his models were fit for a dainty tea party. Taking an ever-eccentric route, Gucci paired ruffles with quirky glasses and gold accents.

  • Not-so-Basic Black & White

Tired of your old LBD? Never fear, Milan couture is here! Follow Anteprima’s lead, and flaunt an unexpected boxy silhouette. Or shake up the basic hues with strategic cut-outs (thank you Cavalli!). And yes, Les Copains, we see that pop of red, and we totally approve.
